To use a French butter dish, also known as a "butter bell," you simply pack softened butter into the lid, then place the lid (with the butter inside) upside down into the base of the dish which is filled with a small amount of water; the water creates a seal to keep the butter fresh and spreadable at room temperature, and you should change the water every few days to maintain hygiene.

Key steps:

  • Soften the butter: Bring your butter to room temperature so it's easily spreadable before packing it into the dish.
  • Fill the base with water: Add about an inch of cold water to the bottom of the French butter dish.
  • Pack the butter: Press the butter firmly into the lid cavity, ensuring it reaches the rim.
  • Place the lid in the water: Carefully place the butter-filled lid upside down into the water, making sure the lip of the lid is submerged.
  • Change the water regularly: Replace the water in the base every 2-3 days to prevent bacteria growth.
